Spring Fling: An Annual Celebration of Earth Day

Join us on Saturday, April 26, 2008 from 10 am until 3 pm as we celebrate Earth Day and the Bellaire City Centennial at the Nature Discovery Center in Bellaire. Spring Fling is a free annual community event that will entertain, educate and engage your entire family with children’s crafts and activities, nature walks, and environmental exhibitors. Toddlers and their parents are welcome to play in our shaded “Toddler Zone”, while older kids enjoy making recycled paper or binoculars to take on a nature walk. Your whole family might visit with animals from the Gulf Coast Turtle and Tortoise Society, or stop by the Discovery Rooms to learn about prairies and pet animals and specimens on display. Back by popular demand this year, electric cars from the Houston Electric Automobile Association are sure to spark your family's imagination.

This year, Spring Fling coincides with Bellaire's Centennial Celebration. As a member of the Bellaire community, the Nature Discovery Center is pleased to offer your family two different ways to honor Bellaire's history. A display of photos and historical information that chronicle's the 100 year development of Bellaire will be on display throughout the event in the Center's historic Henshaw House. Stop by to see the dramatic changes that have taken place in Bellaire's landscape. Also in commemoration of Bellaire's 100 year history, and in the spirit of Earth Day, the Nature Discovery Center will be giving away at least 100 trees to be planted in the City of Bellaire. Trees for Houston will be on hand to offer tree planting advice to those who adopt trees at the event.

Admission and activities at Spring Fling are FREE, but for those who want to shop to support the Nature Discovery Center's science and nature programing or the gardens of Russ Pitman Park, you can stop by the Scholastic Book Fair inside the Center, or the Bellaire Garden Club Spring Plant Sale (from 8am – 3pm) out back under the shady pavilions.
