Great Backyard Bird Count
Join us for the 2017 Global Great Backyard Bird Count! The Nature Discovery Center is excited to take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) again!
Sunday, February 19, 9 am – 10:30 am
Bird watchers from around the world will take part in this annual event sometime between Friday, February 17, and Monday, February 20, 2017. Participants in the free event will join tens of thousands of volunteers of all levels of birding experience to count birds in their own backyards, local parks or wildlife refuges.
Join us on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017 from 9:00 to 10:30 am for the count. We will meet at the front porch of the Nature Discovery Center. If you are a little late, just find us in the park. Families are welcome. Registration is not required.
Bring a pair of binoculars, but if you don’t have any, we have a couple of extra pair here. Please call or e-mail Mary Ann ahead of time to make sure we have a pair for your use if needed. (email@example.com)
Checklists submitted by all "citizen scientists" help scientists and researchers learn more about how different bird species are doing, how their populations and ranges are changing, and how to protect them. The 2016 record breaking GBBC turned in more than 162,052 checklists from an estimated 163,763 participants in more than 130 countries. Even more amazing is that bird watchers reported 5,689 species--passing 2015 records by a massive 599 species and topping 50% of the world's birds for the first time! 665 species were recorded in the United States.
