Family Fun at the Center
Visit & Explore - Russ Pitman Park is a place where families can wander through small wetlands, rest in the shade of towering pecans, check out the insects flitting around the Pocket Prairie and peek into the fountain to watch the fish and tadpoles swim about. At the Nature Discovery Center you can visit the Discovery Rooms, visit our indoor animals and explore the Discovery Boxes.
Birthday Parties – host a party in the shade of the pavilions, let us provide an animal program and/or guide your guests in exploring our Discovery Rooms. An easy party with fun for all.
Special Events – especially geared for families with pre-school and elementary aged children, our events are a great way to spend an active, enjoyable afternoon together.
**NEW** Nature Bike Tour of Brays Bayou - this guided, family-friendly tour offered in May 2016 will allow you to observe and learn about the wildlife that shares this urban habitat.
Family Friendly Summer Talks - interactive presentations with live animals, walks in the park, and more.
Park After Dark Walks - these night time walks in the park offer kids and their parents a rare opportunity to glimpse at the animals that are out and about in the park after the sun goes down.
Walk on the Wild Side! - Park Steward and Senior Staff Naturalist Mary Ann Beauchemin explores the wild side of nature in the city with fun, family friendly walks in Russ Pitman Park.
Family Friendly Swift Night Out Events - Come count swifts with us as they swoop and soar over local chimneys and enter their roosts for the night. Swift Night Out Events take place in August and early September ever year. We often count 500+ swifts at the Pershing location, and have counted over 1800 at Lakeview Elementary!
“We love the Nature Discovery Center! I’ve been bringing children here to play for about 12 years or so. I’m a Nanny. It’s a great learning facility about nature and our world. It gives great bonding time for children and their siblings, parents and friends.” ~ Michelle (37)
“Great place to entertain/teach the kids.” ~ Paul Montano
