We are constantly in need of volunteers at the Nature Discovery Center. Projects can be tailored to your skills, schedule and interests! Please call or come by if you'd like to volunteer - we'd love to find out how we can help you and how you might help us!
Individuals
Many volunteer positions and projects are taken on by individuals who want to make a difference here at the Nature Discovery Center or in Russ Pitman Park.
-
School Field Trip Docents - Staff and volunteers lead groups of 10 elementary aged students on simple field studies in the park and assist them during a brief visit to the Discovery Rooms. (Training required*)
-
Discovery Room Interpreters - Discovery Room guides greet families as they come in and help them to find the animals and activities that are interesting and age appropriate for their children. (Training required*)
-
Special Event Activity Guides - Volunteers help guide children and their families in fun and educational activities during our Spring Fling, Pumpkin Patch, and Holiday Market.
-
School Break and Summer Science Camp Counselors - Middle School and High School students are invited to be counselors for camps for 5 - 10 year olds. One-day School's Out Day Camps are held throughout the school year during holidays, Spring Break, and teacher inservice days. Weeklong camps are held for 9 weeks between June and August. Camp counselors assist the teachers and help individual campers with crafts, projects, games, etc. (Training required*)
-
Receptionists - We need help answering phone calls and taking messages during school programs and staff meetings. We could use help two or three hours in the mornings or afternoons - whatever your schedule will allow. Our need for receptionists also increases around special events and during our school break and summer camps.
-
Outreach Program Presenters - Give presentations to groups of children that incorporate some of our live animals (e.g. bunnies), specimens and other artifacts. Appropriate for schools, libraries, birthday parties, scout groups, etc. Most are 45 minutes to 1 hour. (Training required*)
-
House Artists - Help with artwork and signage for exhibits, discovery boxes, etc. Flexible schedule.
-
Carpenters, Plumbers, Electricians, etc. - Help us with exhibit design and construction and general handyman jobs around the house and out in the park. No specific schedule. Flexible schedule.
-
Willing Wednesday Workers - Join our group of weekly volunteers who help us as needed with gardening, carpentry, and general handyman jobs around the park and around the house. Meet at the house on Wednesday mornings at 10am.
-
Photographers - Photograph staff and visitors, summer camps, classes and special events for our albums and for our website.
-
Bulk Mailing Team Members - Help fold and address quarterly newsletters (last week of February, May, August, November).
*Training sessions are provided for individuals or groups of people interested in volunteer positions that require guidance and specialized instruction. Please call for more information.
Groups (School, Scouts, and Church)
Some jobs are just better for larger groups of volunteers! The more the merrier!
-
Throughout the year we hold special events (Spring Fling in April, Pumpkin Patch in October and Holiday Market in December) which require a lot of preparation and clean up help and sometimes help running the events themselves. Event activity guides help guide children and their families in fun and educational activities.
-
The park is always in need of maintenance! Mulching trails, raking leaves, pruning bushes, and pulling weeds all make great group service projects!
- Getting the word out about the Nature Discovery Center and its programs and events calls for bulk mailing! And this means - lots of papers to fold, envelops to address, stamp, and seal, etc. If your group needs some service credit and would like to help with newsletter (last weeks of February, May, August, & November) or special event mailings (September/October &March), please let us know!
Note: If we have not described a position that matches your interests and talents, give us a call at 713-667-6550 or e-mail: mail@naturediscoverycenter.org. All contributions of time, talent and energy are welcome!
